Canadian Journal of Surgery

The ''Canadian Journal of Surgery'', also known as the ''CJS'' or ''Can J Surg'', is a peer-reviewed medical journal specializing in surgery, published by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). It publishes original research, reviews, news from surgical societies, practice and technical updates, and editorials. The editors-in-chief are Major Vivian Charles McAlister, a general surgeon in London, Ontario and Dr. Edward J Harvey, an orthopedic surgeon in Montreal, Quebec. The ''Can J Surg'' has been Canada's surgical journal of record since 1957. It is sponsored by the Canadian Association of General Surgeons, the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery, the Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons and the Canadian Society of Surgical Oncology. The journal is distributed to every surgeon in Canada.
''Can J Surg'' is an open-access journal that deposits published papers with PubMed Central without any delay. The complete journal is available free of charge by request.
== History ==
''Can J Surg'' was established as a result of a collaboration between Canadian departments of surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Canadian Medical Association. In 1957, leading surgical groups asked the Canadian Medical Association to undertake the publishing of ''Can J Surg''. The founding editorial board consisted of the chairs of surgery at the 12 medical schools in Canada at the time. The president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada chaired the editorial board.〔; http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2501767/〕 The first issue was published on 1 October 1957.
